Today, I spent a delightful morning walking with my dogs and grandson in the beautiful area around Portlethen, near the postcode AB12 4RL. This scenic stretch, which seems to extend for a couple of miles, is home to the popular Farm Stop, a well-known family farm attraction.

While the exact name of this farm area i dont know, it’s a charming part of the Aberdeenshire countryside, close to the town of Portlethen, about 10 minutes south of Aberdeen. Portlethen itself is a quaint coastal town with a rich history, featuring landmarks like Portlethen Village and the nearby Portlethen Moss nature reserve, offering a mix of natural beauty and rural charm.

Our adventure began at the hay bales, where my dog Nova and grandson couldn’t resist a playful romp. If there’s a hay bale around, those two make a beeline for it!

Next, we visited the Farm Stop, a
meticulously kept farm shop and attraction. Sadly, dogs aren’t allowed inside, but Nova enjoyed peering through the fences, making new friends with the animals outside.

The farm is a treasure trove of life, with ducks waddling in the pond, chickens clucking about, and a variety of animals including donkeys, pigs, llamas, goats, sheep, Highland cows, and horses. It’s an immaculate, family-friendly spot, perfect for kids to explore and learn.

Our walk took us to the bridge with its intriguing large round pipes and small stream underneath. These pipes are likely culverts, designed to channel water under the bridge to prevent flooding, a common feature in rural areas like this to manage natural streams.

My grandson Rhys decided to have some fun, pretending to fall off the bridge to tease Nova—though he was safely on the ground the whole time! Nova, bless her, didn’t seem convinced by his antics, adding a chuckle to our day. We also watched a few trains go by, adding a bit of excitement as we walked under the bridge.

We continued to a field of sheep, watching them graze peacefully, before strolling along an old stone wall, soaking in the rustic vibe. The area was quiet, with only a few cars passing by, each driver offering a friendly wave—a testament to the warm community spirit here. This walk was a perfect blend of nature, fun, and family time, making it a memory to cherish in the lovely Portlethen countryside!

A sweet surprise came when we stumbled upon wild raspberries along the path. Quite common on many of our walks around Stonehaven and Aberdeen, Plucking them straight from the bush, we savoured their juicy, tangy flavour—a perfect natural treat on this lovely walk. This walk was a perfect blend of nature, fun, and family time, making it a memory to cherish in the lovely Portlethen countryside!
