Correct Movement and Lack of Muscle in Dogs: How Strength Affects Gait, Balance and Soundness

A dog does not need to look like a canine bodybuilder to move well. However, every dog needs enough correctly developed muscle to support its frame, stabilise its joints and produce controlled, efficient movement.


When muscle condition is poor, a dog may lose power, tire more quickly or struggle to keep its body stable. Its stride may become shorter or uneven, while everyday actions such as rising, turning and climbing stairs can become more difficult.



However, there is an important point every owner should understand:




Lack of muscle can contribute to poor movement—but pain, injury or abnormal movement can also cause muscle loss.


For this reason, a noticeable change in gait should never be dismissed as a dog simply being unfit or needing more exercise.

What Does Correct Movement Mean in a Dog?




There is no single movement pattern that should look identical in every dog.

A Dachshund, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Greyhound have very different proportions, limb lengths and body shapes. Their stride length, posture and foot placement will therefore differ.


Correct, functional movement is generally:



  • balanced and coordinated;

  • appropriate for the dog’s breed, build, age and speed;

  • reasonably symmetrical from side to side;

  • free from obvious pain, stiffness or repeated stumbling;

  • efficient, without unnecessary effort or exaggerated compensation;

  • supported by controlled joint movement and suitable muscle strength.


A sound dog should normally be able to walk, turn and change pace without repeatedly protecting one limb or shifting its weight abnormally.



At the trot, the diagonally opposite front and hind limbs move together. This regular two-beat gait can make differences in rhythm, stride length and left-to-right movement easier to see.



Speed affects stride length, foot placement and the forces passing through the limbs. A dog should therefore be observed at a consistent, comfortable pace rather than being rushed or pulled forward.

For the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the Royal Kennel Club breed standard describes movement as:



“Free, powerful and agile with economy of effort.”


It also states that the legs should move parallel when viewed from the front or rear, with discernible drive from the hindlegs.

This is a breed-standard description rather than a veterinary examination, but it highlights the importance of power, coordination and efficient movement—not exaggerated action.






Why Does Muscle Matter for Movement?



Skeletal muscles do far more than make a dog look strong.


Working alongside the tendons, joints and nervous system, muscles help to:



  • move the body forwards;

  • control and slow each limb;

  • stabilise joints while weight-bearing;

  • support posture and the topline;

  • absorb and manage forces during movement;

  • maintain balance when turning or changing speed;

  • support everyday actions such as standing, sitting and climbing steps.


The hindquarter muscles are especially important for propulsion, acceleration, jumping and rising from the floor.

Muscles around the shoulders, chest and forelimbs help support and control the front of the body. The forelimbs carry and manage a considerable proportion of the load during normal movement, particularly when the dog slows down, lands or moves downhill.



The abdominal, spinal and other core muscles help stabilise the trunk and transfer force between the front and rear of the dog.


However, muscle mass alone does not guarantee correct or sound movement.

Joint structure, conformation, body weight, pain, flexibility, balance, coordination, neurological function and cardiovascular fitness all play important roles.

A heavily muscled dog can still move poorly, while a naturally lean endurance breed may be extremely fit, strong and efficient.







How Can Lack of Muscle Affect a Dog’s Gait?



Insufficient muscle can reduce a dog’s strength, stability and endurance. The visible signs will vary depending on which muscles are affected and whether there is an underlying supports normal nutritional needsth problem.


Possible signs include:


  • reduced push or drive from the hindlegs;

  • a shorter or more cautious stride;

  • difficulty rising from the floor;

  • tiring earlier during normal walks;

  • trembling or shaking while standing;

  • swaying through the body;

Weakness and lameness are not exactly the same.


Weakness may appear as trembling, reduced stamina, difficulty rising or an inability to support the body properly.



Lameness usually involves altered use of one or more limbs, often because of pain, injury or impaired function.


A dog can experience both at the same time.

Shortened strides, bunny-hopping, toe dragging, knuckling, stiffness, limping, wobbling and difficulty rising are not proof that lack of muscle is the only problem. These signs can also occur with orthopaedic, spinal, neurological or muscular conditions.

They require proper investigation rather than an assumption that additional exercise or protein will fix them.




The Muscle-Loss and Poor-Movement Cycle



Muscle loss and altered movement can influence one another.


A dog with an injury or painful joint may place less weight through the affected limb. Reduced loading and activity can then cause disuse atrophy—the loss of muscle because it is no longer being used normally.

As muscle strength declines, the dog may have less ability to stabilise the limb and perform everyday activities. It may then compensate further by shifting its weight or changing the way it moves.



This can create a cycle:


  1. Pain or injury changes the dog’s movement.

  2. The dog uses the affected area less.

  3. Reduced use leads to muscle loss.

  4. Weakness makes normal movement more difficult.

  5. Further compensation places additional strain on other areas.


This does not mean that muscle weakness caused the original condition.

In many dogs, muscle loss is a visible clue that another problem may be present. Noticeable loss of muscle from one thigh or limb, for example, can indicate that the dog has been unloading that limb and should be examined by a vet.



Veterinary rehabilitation often aims to restore strength, balance, comfortable movement and everyday function after injury or surgery. The correct programme must be based on the diagnosis and the dog’s stage of supports normal nutritional needsing.



Common Reasons Dogs Lose Muscle




1. Reduced activity or disuse

Muscle can decline when a dog becomes less active because of injury, surgery, pain, restricted exercise, crate rest or a major change in routine.

3. Orthopaedic pain or joint disease

Osteoarthritis, cruciate ligament injury, hip or elbow disease and other painful orthopaedic conditions can change how a dog bears weight.

Muscle loss may develop as a consequence of reduced use and can then become another factor limiting movement and recovery.




4. Neurological disease

Conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves or neuromuscular junction can cause weakness, poor coordination, abnormal foot placement and muscle wasting.

These problems cannot be corrected through general conditioning alone and require veterinary investigation.




5. Primary muscle disease

Disease or injury affecting muscle tissue can cause weakness, pain, stiffness, trembling or atrophy.

Inflammatory, inherited, metabolic and injury-related muscle disorders are among the possible causes.



6. Illness, poor appetite or unbalanced nutrition


Muscle loss may accompany chronic disease, prolonged poor appetite, inadequate energy or protein intake, digestive problems or a diet that is not nutritionally complete and balanced.

A dog can also carry excess body fat while losing muscle. Body weight alone does not reveal whether a dog has supports normal nutritional needsthy muscle condition.




7. Inappropriate exercise

Too little activity can contribute to deconditioning, but excessive or unsuitable exercise can cause fatigue, pain and injury.

Body Condition and Muscle Condition Are Not the Same



Body Condition Score and Muscle Condition Score assess different parts of a dog’s physical condition.

Body Condition Score, or BCS, primarily estimates body fat.


Muscle Condition Score, or MCS, assesses the amount of muscle over specific areas of the body.


Both are important because a dog can be overweight and still have significant muscle loss. Equally, a naturally lean dog may have a low body-fat score while maintaining supports normal nutritional needsthy muscle.



Muscle condition is commonly assessed by looking at and feeling the muscles around the:


  • skull and temples;

  • shoulder blades;

  • spine and lower back;

  • pelvic bones.

How to Look at Your Dog’s Movement at Home


A home video can help you identify changes and may provide useful information for your vet. It cannot diagnose the cause of abnormal movement.

To record your dog:



  1. Choose a flat, firm and non-slip surface with enough room for natural movement.

  2. Film the dog walking at a comfortable speed from the side, front and rear.

  3. If the dog is comfortable and normally trots, record a short, controlled trot.

  4. Keep the lead loose enough to allow natural head and neck movement while maintaining control.

  5. Record the dog moving in both directions.

  6. Avoid deliberately tiring or repeatedly exercising the dog.

  7. Compare the footage with an older video taken before the change, if one is available.


Look for:



  • an even rhythm;

  • similar stride length on both sides;

  • consistent foot placement;

  • head nodding or repeated head movement;

  • one hip rising or dropping differently;

  • toes scraping the ground;

  • paws turning or crossing;

  • reduced hindleg drive;

  • repeated weight shifting;

  • reluctance to turn in one direction.



A head nod can sometimes accompany forelimb lameness, but interpreting it correctly is not always straightforward. Video observations should be shared with a veterinary professional rather than used for self-diagnosis.



Do not manipulate a painful joint or force a lame, weak or distressed dog to exercise for the camera.

Seek urgent veterinary advice if your dog:

  • develops paralysis or rapidly worsening coordination.
