Why We Use Full-Grain Leather
Full-grain leather is widely regarded as the highest-quality grade of leather because the strong natural grain surface remains intact. It has not been heavily sanded or corrected to disguise natural markings.
This helps the leather retain its strength, texture and individual character. With suitable care, full-grain leather can gradually soften and develop a beautiful natural patina rather than simply wearing out.
Why We Use Buffalo Leather
Buffalo leather is known for its dense fibre structure, strength and distinctive natural grain. It creates a substantial foundation beneath the soft suede and helps the collar retain its shape.
The double buffalo-leather underlayer adds strength and support while allowing the collar to become more flexible through careful, regular use.
Why We Choose Vegetable-Tanned Leather
Vegetable tanning is a traditional process that uses tannins obtained from plant materials such as bark, leaves and wood.
The process takes longer and requires more skilled handling than many faster mass-production methods. This makes vegetable-tanned leather more expensive and less common in lower-cost collars.
We choose it because it produces strong, characterful leather without relying on chromium tanning salts. It may feel firm when new, but it is designed to soften gradually while retaining its structure.
What Does Drum-Dyed Leather Mean?
Drum dyeing allows colour to penetrate the leather more deeply than a simple surface coating. The leather is gently rotated inside a dyeing drum, helping distribute the colour through the material.
Natural variations may still remain because genuine leather is not a perfectly uniform synthetic material. These small differences contribute to the character of every handcrafted set.
Why We Use Handpicked Leather
Natural leather varies from hide to hide. Each piece is selected by hand for its strength, thickness, grain and overall appearance.
Hand selection allows the artisans to choose suitable sections for the different parts of the collar and lead while preserving the individual character of the leather.
Why the Roller Buckle Matters
The roller built into the buckle allows the thick leather strap to pass through more smoothly when the collar is fastened.
This helps reduce unnecessary rubbing and strain on the leather, which is particularly useful with a substantial 8.5 mm triple-layer collar.
Why We Use a Solid, Non-Joined D-Ring
The D-ring is formed as one solid piece rather than being visibly split or joined. This creates a strong attachment point while maintaining the premium finish of the collar.
How to Measure Using an Old Collar
For the most accurate fit, use a collar that already fits your dog comfortably.
Fasten the old collar on the hole your dog normally uses.
Place the fastened collar on a flat surface in its natural circular shape.
Use a flexible tape to measure around the inside edge of the circle.
Do not measure the collar laid flat from end to end.
If the inside circumference measures between 14 and 16 inches, this collar should provide a suitable fit.
You should be able to slide two fingers comfortably between the collar and your dog’s neck. Always measure before ordering rather than relying on breed alone.
How the Leather Will Soften
A new triple-layer vegetable-tanned collar may initially feel firm. This is normal and reflects its substantial 8.5 mm construction.
Normal handling, your dog’s body warmth and contact with the natural oils from the coat will gradually help the leather become more flexible. Allow it to soften naturally rather than folding, twisting or forcing it.
Important Care When New
Do not immediately apply saddle soap, heavy oils, leather softener, polish or conditioner.
New leather already contains oils introduced during production. Applying too much additional product can oversoften it, darken the colour or affect the suede surface.
Allow the collar to settle and soften naturally before considering any specialist treatment.
How to Clean the Suede
Remove loose dust using a clean, soft suede brush.
Brush gently in one direction.
Use a specialist suede eraser lightly on small dry marks.
Never scrub or soak the suede.
Do not apply ordinary leather cream or saddle soap to the suede.
Test any specialist product on a hidden area first because it may affect the deep ruby colour.
How to Clean the Buffalo Leather
Wipe light dirt away with a soft, barely damp cloth.
Never soak or submerge the collar or lead.
Allow the leather to dry naturally at room temperature.
Keep it away from radiators, fires, hairdryers and strong direct sunlight.
Only consider a suitable leather conditioner later if the leather genuinely becomes dry.
Keep conditioners away from the suede top layer.
Wipe the polished brass fittings with a clean, dry cloth after use, particularly following exposure to rain or sea air. Avoid abrasive metal polish because it may affect the rose-gold and gold finish.
