How to Measure Using Your Dog’s Existing Collar
For the most accurate fit, use a collar that already fits your dog comfortably.
1. Fasten the old collar on the hole normally used.
2. Place the fastened collar on a flat surface in its natural circular shape.
3. Measure around the inside edge of the circle with a flexible tape measure.
4. Do not measure the collar laid flat from end to end, as this will not give the correct neck size.
5. The inside measurement should fall between 14.5 and 16.5 inches for this set.
The collar should sit comfortably without being loose. Allow enough room to slide two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck. Please measure carefully before ordering.
Why We Use Vegetable-Tanned Leather
Vegetable tanning is a traditional process that uses natural tannins found in plant materials, including bark, leaves and wood. It takes longer than many modern tanning methods but produces strong leather with a firm structure and beautiful natural character.
New vegetable-tanned leather can initially feel firmer than an ordinary fashion collar. This is normal and helps the collar retain its shape. With careful use, it gradually becomes more flexible and develops its own individual character.
Why We Use Full-Grain Leather
Full-grain leather is made using the strongest outer layer of the hide. Its natural grain has not been heavily sanded away, allowing the leather to retain its strength, texture and individual markings.
Rather than being hidden beneath an artificial surface, the hide’s natural character remains visible. Minor variations in grain are part of genuine full-grain leather and make every handcrafted set slightly different.
Why We Use Buffalo Leather
Buffalo leather is valued for its strength, durability and distinctive natural grain. Its dense fibres make it particularly suitable for substantial, handcrafted leatherwork.
The double full-grain buffalo leather underlayer gives the collar strength and structure, while the soft deep ruby red suede creates a rich, luxurious finish.
How the Leather Softens Naturally
Because this collar is made from thick, triple-layer leather, it may feel firm when first received. At 8.5 mm thick, it is designed to be substantial and may require a gentle breaking-in period.
Normal handling, your dog’s body warmth and contact with the natural oils from the coat will gradually help the leather become more flexible. It should soften with use while continuing to retain its shape and supportive structure.
Do not fold, twist or force the collar to soften it. Allow the leather to relax naturally over time.
Important Care When the Collar Is New
Do not apply saddle soap, leather softener, heavy oils, waxes or conditioners immediately. New vegetable-tanned leather already contains oils introduced during production, and adding too much product can oversoften it, darken the colour or affect the suede.
Allow the collar to settle and soften naturally before considering any leather-care treatment.
How to Clean the Suede
- Remove loose dust with a clean, soft suede brush.
- Brush gently in one direction to lift the suede’s natural texture.
- For a small dry mark, use a clean suede eraser very lightly.
- Do not scrub the suede.
- Do not soak it in water.
- Avoid household cleaners, disinfectants, saddle soap and ordinary leather cream on the suede.
- Test any specialist suede product on a small, hidden area first, as it may alter the deep ruby colour.
How to Clean the Buffalo Leather
- Wipe away light dirt using a soft, barely damp cloth.
- Never soak or submerge the collar or lead.
- Allow the leather to dry naturally at room temperature.
- Keep it away from radiators, fires, hairdryers and strong direct sunlight.
- Once completely dry, gently buff the smooth leather with a clean, soft cloth.
- Only use a suitable leather conditioner later if the leather genuinely becomes dry, applying a very small amount to a hidden area first.
- Keep conditioners away from the suede top layer.
Caring for the Fittings
Wipe the black-polished brass fittings with a soft, dry cloth after use, particularly following exposure to rain or sea air. Do not use abrasive metal polish, as it could damage or remove the dark finish.
If the Set Gets Wet
Blot away excess moisture with a clean towel and reshape the collar gently. Leave it to dry naturally in a well-ventilated room. Do not place it on a radiator or use direct heat, as rapid drying can make leather stiff or cause distortion.
