Why We Choose Full-Grain Buffalo Leather

Not all leather is created equal.

At HENCH WEAR, we believe the quality of the leather is just as important as the beautiful fittings and craftsmanship.

Full-grain leather is widely regarded as the highest grade of leather, retaining the natural outer grain of the hide rather than being sanded or heavily corrected.

This preserves the distinctive natural character of the leather while providing excellent strength and durability.

Buffalo leather is especially valued for its robust structure, attractive grain and ability to withstand everyday use when properly cared for.

Unlike synthetic materials or heavily processed leather, quality full-grain buffalo leather develops its own character over time.

It is a material that can become even more beautiful as it matures.

Why Vegetable-Tanned Leather Makes a Difference

One of the special qualities of our HENCH WEAR collection is the use of traditionally vegetable-tanned leather.

Vegetable tanning is a centuries-old leather-making process using natural tannins derived from plant materials, including tree bark.

Unlike conventional chrome tanning, vegetable tanning does not rely on chromium tanning salts.

It is often a slower, more expensive process that requires considerable knowledge and skilled craftsmanship.

The Benefits of Vegetable-Tanned Leather

  • Traditional craftsmanship – a time-honoured leather-making method.

  • Premium structure – produces substantial leather that holds its shape.

  • Natural softening – the leather gradually becomes more supple through normal use.

  • Beautiful ageing – develops an attractive patina over time.

  • Experienced production – requires specialist skills and careful processing.

  • Higher production costs – generally more time-consuming than conventional mass-market tanning.

Vegetable-tanned leather is particularly appealing for premium collars because of its combination of structure, character and natural beauty.

Although vegetable tanning avoids chromium tanning salts, it does not mean finished leather is entirely chemical-free or suitable for chewing.

Double-Construction Leather – Built with Substance

The beauty of this collar goes much deeper than its appearance.

With approximately 8.5mm of double-construction full-grain buffalo leather, the collar has a substantial, luxurious feel.

The layered construction provides structure and body while allowing the leather to soften naturally over time.

This is not a lightweight fashion collar made simply to look attractive.

It is a carefully constructed leather accessory combining quality materials, traditional skills and distinctive detailing.

The Iconic Stafford Knot – A Tribute to the Breed

One of the most striking features of this new set is its beautiful solid brass Staffordshire Bull Terrier knot detailing.

The Stafford knot is an instantly recognisable symbol associated with the breed and its heritage.

Combined with traditional Celtic-inspired buttons, decorative brass bars and polished gold-coloured fittings, it gives this collar a distinctive appearance that Staffordshire Bull Terrier enthusiasts will appreciate.

Against the rich mahogany leather, the gold detailing creates a stunning contrast.

Traditional breed heritage meets luxury leather craftsmanship.

How to Measure Your Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Choosing the correct size is essential for a comfortable and secure fit.

The simplest way to measure is to use a collar your dog already wears comfortably.

  1. Fasten your dog's existing collar at the hole normally used.

  2. Measure the inside circumference of the fastened collar.

  3. If the measurement is between 13 and 16 inches, this HENCH WEAR collar is designed to fit.

  4. Always check that the collar sits comfortably and cannot easily slip over your dog's head.

Important: The overall collar length is 19.5 inches, but the fitting measurement is 13–16 inches.

Please measure before ordering.

Caring for Your Full-Grain Buffalo Leather Collar

Premium vegetable-tanned leather does not need excessive cleaning or constant conditioning.

In fact, overusing leather products can do more harm than good.

Our Leather Care Recommendations

  • Gently wipe everyday dirt away with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

  • Allow wet leather to dry naturally.

  • Keep away from direct heat, radiators and prolonged soaking.

  • Avoid frequent saddle soap applications.

  • Do not immediately apply oils, heavy conditioners or polish to new leather.

  • Allow the leather to soften naturally with normal use.

  • Check stitching, buckles and lead fittings regularly.

New vegetable-tanned leather can initially feel quite firm. This is normal for substantial leather construction, and it will gradually become more supple through handling and regular wear.
