Some collars deserve a closer look. Our new Hench Wear Union Jack collars combine intricate red, white and blue beadwork with substantial leather, a padded lining and polished fittings.

Available in black or deep blue, these limited-edition collars bring distinctive detail to your dog’s wardrobe. Each is handcrafted by professional artisans, with hand stitching and carefully smoothed, rounded edges.

Hand-Beaded Detail with British Character

The Union Jack design is created from individual beads, forming a colourful panel framed by leather. Look closer and you can appreciate the work involved: rows of small beads building the familiar flag pattern.

The result is a statement collar with texture, colour and character.

Choose black for a classic finish or deep blue for a subtle alternative.

Why Full-Grain Leather?

Full-grain leather retains the grain surface of the hide rather than having it sanded away to create a more uniform appearance. Natural grain variations help give each piece its own character.

With appropriate care, quality full-grain leather can develop a patina—a gradual change in appearance that reflects its use. It is a material chosen for its combination of structure, durability and individual finish.

These collars pair a full-grain buffalo leather outer with a padded full-grain cow leather inner, bringing together a substantial exterior and a cushioned lining.

What Does Buffalo Leather Bring to the Collar?

Buffalo leather is valued for its distinctive grain and substantial feel. Its final softness and flexibility depend on the hide, thickness, tanning and finishing.

For this collar, it provides a structured outer that frames the beadwork beautifully. The padded cow leather lining completes the inside, while rounded edges give the collar a carefully finished feel.

What Does Vegetable-Tanned Mean?

Vegetable tanning uses tannins derived from plant materials, such as bark or wood, to turn hide into leather. The name describes the tanning process; the leather itself is still animal hide.

It is a traditional method often chosen for leather goods where structure, character and the ability to develop a patina are desirable.

Vegetable-tanned leather can feel firm when new and become more supple with use. It still needs sensible care: it is not waterproof, and prolonged soaking or direct heat can affect its finish and shape.

Will This Collar Fit My Dog?

The stated fitting range is 16–19 inches, approximately 40.6–48.3 cm, measured around the inside of a comfortably fastened collar.

The easiest way to check is to use a collar your dog already wears comfortably:

  1. Fasten the old collar at its usual hole.

  2. Remove it from your dog, leaving it fastened.

  3. Run a flexible measuring tape around the complete inside circle.

  4. Read the measurement where the tape meets its starting point.

If your old collar measures between 16 and 19 inches around the inside, this collar is within the stated fitting range.

Do not measure the outside edge or the total length of the strap. Once your new collar arrives, check its fit on your dog before use.

Firm at First, More Supple with Wear

Your new collar may feel firm or stiff initially. Regular wear, gentle flexing and contact with natural oils gradually help the leather become more supple.

Allow this to happen naturally. The aim is comfortable flexibility while preserving the collar’s structure—not making it very soft straight away.

How to Care for Your Beaded Leather Collar

Wipe away everyday dirt with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Gently clean around the beadwork without scrubbing or pulling at the beads.

If the collar becomes wet, blot away excess moisture and allow it to dry naturally, away from radiators and direct heat. Avoid soaking or machine washing.

Do not apply saddle soap, leather cream or softening oils straight away. Over-conditioning can make leather overly soft, darken its finish or affect its shape.

If conditioning is needed later, use a small amount of a suitable product, test it on a discreet area first and keep it away from the beadwork.

Regularly check the stitching, beads, buckle and D-ring for wear or damage.
